CCAS Gift for Monterey Road Elementary School
Atascadero, California

Last Update: 9-27-2004

Generous contributors in San Luis Obispo County, both CCAS members and non-members, donated funding for the purchase of the 8" diameter Hardin Optical / Deep Space Hunter Dobsonian telescope shown below for the Monterey Road Elementary School in Atascadero, California.  Diane Shervem, a 5th grade teacher at Monterey Road, was overheard during the summer of 2004 expressing a serious interest (drooling and dreaming) about this telescope when she saw it at the Hardin-Optical store in Bandon, Oregon, during a family vacation trip along the Oregon Coast.  She has been conducting star parties at her school for many years using very simple equipment, sometimes having CCAS astronomers join her events with their telescopes to make them far more energizing for Monterey Road students.  Little did she know what wheels would be placed in motion by her desire to provide an enhanced solar system education curriculum for students of Monterey Road.  Sometimes dreams do come true.

The CCAS recognizes the following contributors for their outstanding caring, concern and support in this effort of bringing science closer to the students of our nation.  It is with extreme pleasure and pride that the CCAS makes this gift to bring the wonders of stargazing to our children and help them in their quest to reach for the stars.  If only efforts such as this could be done for every grade school in America, the educational process for our nation's children would be far richer.   Hat's off to:

Lee and Penny Coombs
Tom Coughlin
Brian Diederich
Gere diZerega
Dixon Fiske
Aurora and Al Lipper
Dee and Jim Moore
Bill Nichols
Walt Reil
Pete Roebber
Bob Roots
Tom Smith
Len Sutherland
Ray and Barbara Weymann

This kind of simple telescope can do wonders for children and future leaders of our nation.  Our nation's critical need for students having strong backgrounds in math and science could be tremendously enhanced by efforts such as this telescope donation to Monterey Road Elementary School.  If students become excited by what they can see (and imagine) through a telescope such as this, just imagine what they might be able to do if they became involved in using the big-boys ... take a look at CCAS' "Tour of the Universe" and see what the potential is.  Absolutely awesome!
