STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

Come see what SLO County junior high school, high school and college students are involved in this year in their STEM studies and projects.  There will be many things to experience.  The CCAS also plans to be there with an information table with astronomy hand-out materials.  This is the first time for this event in SLO County, so please attend with your families and give a big boost of encouragement to students in their STEM education work.

For details see the DI STEM Showcase website.

PHOENIX Mars Lander Landing Event

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
Business School Rotunda Building, Building 03, Room 213

FREE EVENT !
EXCITING, NEVER-EXPERIENCED SPACE EXPLORATION EVENT ON THE CENTRAL COAST

Come enjoy the excitement and awe of LIVE coverage of the landing of the PHOENIX Mars Lander on Mars on May 25th.  Such a high-end space exploration event has never occurred on the Central Coast, and may not occur again for many years, if ever.  This will be a wonderfully energizing event, especially for students of all ages who love science and space exploration.

Join many other folks who love space exploration, in experiencing a live video/audio connection to NASA's and Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory PHOENIX mission control, watching and listening to the PHOENIX mission team as they wait breathlessly for the rocket landing, and, hopefully, the transmission of live images from the Martian polar ice cap.  PHOENIX will touch-down at 4:36 PM Pacific Time, but the signal will not be received on Earth until a little after 4:50 PM.

Cal Poly Professor and planetary scientist Dr. John Keller will give a presentation about the PHOENIX mission starting at 4 PM.  And, members of Cal Poly's Astronomy Club will have special activities for children ages 4 to 10.

Schedule:

3:45 - 5:00  Activities for children
4:00 - 5:00  Presentation by John Keller
5:00 - 7:00  Live feed from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Post 7 PM  Die-hards can stay, awaiting the first images from Mars

Cake and other refreshments will be provided.

Parking is free at Cal Poly on weekends.  Cal Poly Maps
