Today, the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north, marking the Vernal Equinox -- the first day of
Spring in the Northern Hemisphere and
Fall in the
Southern Hemisphere. The Vernal (Spring)
Equinox
is when the Sun moves north of the Earth's Equator as projected into the
sky. Equinox means equal
night and with the Sun on the celestial equator, Earthlings will experience 12 hours of daylight and 12
hours of darkness. For those in the Northern Hemisphere, the days will continue to grow longer with the
Sun marching higher in the sky as
Summer approaches.
From the Vernal Equinox until the Autumnal
(Fall)
Equinox, in September, the Sun will
be in the Northern Hemisphere. On the Equinox, the Sun
rises
due east and sets
due west. The Autumnal Equinox occurs in September, when the Sun
moves across the
celestial equator moving from north to south. |
